Justin Rutledge stars in Eurydice by Sarah Ruhl at SummerWorks Festival

Justin Rutledge currently stars in the Canadian performance debut of Pulitzer Prize finalist Sarah Ruhl’s Eurydice, a modern retelling of the ancient myth of Orpheus – from the dead bride’s point of view.

Directed by Kristina Nicoll and featuring Caitlin B Driscoll as Eurydice, Justin Rutledge as Orpheus, Hardee T. Lineham as The Father, Jesse Aaron Dwyre as Nasty Interesting Man/Lord of The Underworld, Moira Dunphy as Big Stone, Elley-Ray Hennessy as Loud Stone, Elliott Loran as Little Stone.

Lighting design by Dora nominee Kevin Hutson and sound design by Verne Good. Stage Management by Laura Cournoyea and Pip Bradford Design Consultant Arndt Von Holtzendorff. Production Godfather: Derrick Chua. Associate producer: Alexandra Lalonde. Executive Producer: Kristina Nicoll.

Michael Ondaatje’s adaptation of his novel Divisadero marks the author‘s return to Necessary Angel after a lengthy absence. Following sold-out workshop presentations last fall (with the working title When My Name Was Anna), Ondaatje teams with director Daniel Brooks for Divisadero: a performance. Ondaatje‘s story explores themes of memory, identity, love and the grip of the past on the present; and tells of how a single event powerfully shapes the lives of two sisters. The production features original music written for the piece and performed by singer/songwriter Justin Rutledge. The ensemble cast also features Liane Balaban, Maggie Huculak, Tom McCamus and Amy Rutherford. Divisadero: a performance is designed by Andrea Lundy, Alexander MacSween, and John Thompson, and is stage managed by Crystal Salverda.

Hero Hill notes how the risks Justin’s songwriting contains the sort of risks and artistry that tends to polarize critic’s opinions. But the author is fairly certain The Early Widows is strong enough to unite the camps:

he most exciting thing about Early Widows is that it will change how people think of Rutledge and give people the patience to revisit his catalog with an open mind. As he effortlessly delivers rockers (The Heart of a River) and anthems (if you don’t get swept up by the spirited backing choir on Ms. Montgomery) you are more willing to listen to each and every word he sings, which as always, are moving and powerful. It makes you hear a song like I Have Not Seen The Light , one of the few that could have found a home on his previous records, and realize that even with just a few simple strums, Rutledge is an engaging entertainer that deserves your time.
